WHAT
ARE PROBIOTICS
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when taken in sufficient amounts, can provide significant health benefits. They can help support the bacteria that live in our body, especially when our bacteria are challenged, for example by antibiotics, poor diet, or traveling. They are present in numerous foods and dietary supplements.
LIVE PRO— BIOTIC CUL—TURES
Probiotics can support your health in different ways:
• Help your immune system function properly
• Aid digestion by breaking down the food that’s harder for us to digest
• Keep harmful microorganisms in check
• Produce vitamins and aid nutrient absorption
PRE—
BIOTICS*
Simply put, prebiotics are food for beneficial microbes that live on or in us. They are metabolized by the “good” gut microbes, positively impacting the gut environment, with an overall health benefit. Prebiotics provide health benefits by specifically altering either the composition or function of the gut microbiota. They may increase the levels of beneficial bacteria and microbe-derived metabolites or signaling molecules that are important for health.
They can be found naturally in foods and are added to some dietary supplements and foods, including foods for infants. Most prebiotics are dietary fibers, but not all dietary fibers are prebiotics.

Probiotics and prebiotics may help normalize a gut microbiota disturbed by antibiotics or other stressors and in doing so, improve your health.
